A little over an hour later, there was a knock on the door. A young, good looking college student handed over a bag with the store’s name emblazoned on it. Danny tipped him substantially having already paid by credit card when the owner’s wife called back with the total. He unpacked the clothes with a relish unknown since being a kid at Christmas. He held up the khaki pants with an adjustable waistband. He smiled. He figured the wife was thinking of her husband’s burgeoning waistline. And then the shirt. A well-tailored, subdued button-down oxford with muted stripes. Perfect. The last item was a pair of brown loafers with functional laces. Beautiful. He would wear them in his office in Houston if they were as comfortable as they looked. He picked up the bag to set it on the floor and noticed there was something left. He reached down and pulled out a pair of athletic undershorts. Mauve with an athletic crotch. Is this what her husband, an overweight, middle-aged man wears?

He called down to the front desk and requested a driver take him around to some of the important sites in and around the city. He had barely showered and shaved before he received a call from the lobby telling him the driver was waiting. He dressed quickly, ran his fingers through his hair, and nearly bolted out the door. This was going to be fun.

The driver took him around to see the sights and stopped and waited as Danny explored. He wanted to visit THE RINGLING, a Museum of Art dedicated by the Ringling family of circus fame. He also spent considerable time in the RINGLING CIRCUS MUSEUM, trying to understand his father’s fascination with the lifestyle. He had no idea how long he had been inside, but it hardly mattered. He was beginning, albeit slowly, to understand the role of the elephants in the travelling circus. When John Nicholas Ringling began touring from city to city in the late 1800’s, merely the notion of a beast as huge as an elephant was something every country boy would save his pennies for a year just to have a closeup look. But, at the same time, the covert cruelty of elephants to force them to perform was being magnified by an animal friendly press. By the time his father retired, circuses in the United States were removing animal acts from their performances. Only in countries like Central and South America were the elephants still an integral part of the circus. He wondered whether the young elephant’s mother was being treated well performing in Mexico.

It was late afternoon when the driver dropped him off on the Sarasota Boardwalk. Danny thanked him, paid the fare, and tipped him amply for the guided tour. After the driver left, Danny leaned against the wooden railing and watched hundreds of sunbathers and children playing in the water. It was a far cry from Danny’s usual afternoon where his eyes would be riveted to several computer screens while perusing each trader’s sheets to see if he agreed with their positions.
